What is a dental emergency?
With toothaches coming in various shapes and sizes, knowing what a dental emergency is will help save you time and money.
Don’t ignore these common dental emergency signs:
• Increasing toothache which doesn’t subside
• Unexpected tooth numbness
• Excessive gum ache and bleeding
• Loose or loosening teeth
• Jaw swelling
• Headaches, tooth clenching, and grinding
• Persistent canker sores
Toothaches
A toothache occurs because each of your 32 adult teeth has a nerve running through the center, including the jawbone. These nerves send brain signals when it senses cold, heat, pressure, and pain to give you a toothache.
Toothaches can be avoided by immediately treating cavities, tooth infections, and fractures, instead of waiting and complicating matters. Any toothache is horrible, which is why we work at alleviating your pain as quickly as possible.
A broken or chipped tooth
Damaged teeth can lead to two types of pain. The more intense pain is when the fracture extends to the tooth’s internal nerve. It can lead to possible bacterial accumulation inside the tooth requiring immediate attention. However, most of the time, it’s the broken tooth’s sharp edges that irritate and hurt your tongue or cheek.
Swelling or infection
Swelling usually occurs when there’s an infection. It’s often serious and shouldn’t be neglected because the infection can spread to other tissues if not treated on time. The infection can also lead to foul breath and soft tissue discoloration or pus.
Headaches and jaw pain
Most teeth have nerves that are near the jaw joints or temporomandibular joints (TMJ), leading to possible ear, neck, shoulder, head, or jaw pain. The pain may even lead to headaches, migraines, and even lower back pain.
Gum Pain
Gum pain is also called periodontal gum disease. It’s a serious condition that may not first show symptoms but endangers your oral and whole-body health if untreated.
You know you have gum disease if:
• There’s pus on the gum line or foul breath
• Bleeding after brushing and flossing
• Gums are red, swollen or painful
• Teeth are loose
• Receding gums with teeth sensitivity at the gum line
Do not neglect mild gingivitis because it can escalate to advanced periodontitis. The bacterial infection may spread to severely infect teeth gums, and bone tissue, and eventual tooth loss.
Any Pain
Sometimes you know that your mouth and surrounding tissues hurt. But you can’t describe the pain, or tell if it’s on the top or bottom of your mouth. While it’s challenging, we will find the source and help restore your healthy oral functioning.
Don’t wait!
You should not wait, to call us for an emergency dentist appointment when your symptoms first develop. The pain only worsens as you wait. You will receive a thorough examination and diagnosis and get the right treatment for pain relief, and to re-establish good oral health.
