What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are surgical-grade root devices that offer a permanent solution to restore missing or extracted teeth.  It lets you smile confidently, eat your favorite food, and speak clearly once again.

It’s a popular dental restoration option with Albany residents because it works just like natural teeth and prevents jawbone autotrophy. Besides, it’s possible to use dental implants to restore a single tooth or an entire smile!

And most importantly, dental implants are better than alternatives like bridges because you don’t need to alter other teeth to affix it.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The procedure takes a few months and isn’t done overnight or over a few days. It starts with Dr. Kobayashi making an incision in the jaw to place a screw to install and attach the implant into the jawbone to act as your tooth roots.

We suture the gums, after which the implant takes about 3-6 months to heal. It’s during this period that the implant fuses with your existing bone through the process called osseointegration.

Temporary crowns are then installed over the implant to let you eat and speak normally and maintain your smile’s aesthetic appearance. This completes the placement process.

It’s when the implant is ready that the restoration process starts.

It starts by first removing the crown, and placing an abutment on it. The abutment is now your new tooth’s base where its impression is used to create the permanent restoration.

The abutment needs about a week or two to heal by which time the restoration will also be ready for installation. That’s when you return to our dental office to have the restored crown or bridge permanently attached on the implant.

You now have your old smile restored, and leave the office feeling confident to face the world. You will slowly, over some time, get used to the implant.
